Mac Support Tune-ups
When it comes out of the box, a new Mac is a rock-solid computing solution. But over time, directories become corrupted, permissions errors pile up, and the data space on the hard drive becomes fragmented. Typically problems like these don’t bring things to a crashing halt. But they do affect the speed and throughput of your computer.
Thankfully, Macs don’t get crufted up with viruses, malware, and spyware the way some other computers do. But a periodic tune-up and survey is a good idea nonetheless. Here’s what it typically entails:
• Make sure all software updates have been applied to the system and Apple applications.
• Permissions Repair with Apple’s Disk Utility.
• Directory Repair with a proprietary program called Disk Warrior.
• File Optimization with a proprietary program called Tech Tool Pro 5.
• Disk Optimization with Tech Tool Pro 5 to defragment the drive and speed data access.
• Run Apple System Diagnostic to check the functionality of all the system’s components.
• Provide a detailed survey report giving particulars on the machine and the work performed,
• Clean the machine inside and out. (Polish the Apple.)
Though this sounds like a lot of work, your computer does most of the heavy lifting. It rarely makes sense to run these programs on-site, since a badly fragmented hard drive can take ten to twenty hours to untangle. If we have to do it on-site, you’ll be charged for whatever time it takes. But if we can pick up your machine and let it run on the bench, the charge is modest.
